Pneumonia
For the last 5 days, I’ve been stuck in Mackay memorial hospital with a rather nasty bout of pneumonia. Although we didn’t realise it at the time, it seems that I’ve been suffering from mycoplasma pneumonia for the last month; at some point this became complicated by me also catching a viral infection (adenovirus) of the lungs - and it eventually ended up with full-blown pneumonia.
Last Saturday, I started throwing up - then on Sunday I developed a fever and threw up a few more times. So on Monday morning we went down to the emergency department of Woman&Children hospital(婦幼醫院) - who after stealing some of my blood (I didn’t enjoy that) and doing an Xray of my chest suggested I should be admitted. Since we didn’t want to stay there, we then went on to Mackay memorial hospital - where they checked me again, and after some discussion I was admitted.
To make sure I got enough fluids, they stuck a drip in my foot; they tried to stick it into my hand but two separate doctors failed to find a single vein in either hand, so after about 20 minutes of trying they finally found a vein in my foot (I complained so loudly about this that Mummy had to leave the room!). Needless to say, 3 days later when a nurse replaced the needle, it took her less than 2 minutes to find a suitable vein in my hand and put the drip back in …
Over the next few days, my fever slowly came down, and my energy slowly increased. By Thursday afternoon, my main problem was how to run around properly with the drip still in my arm, so I was allowed to go home yesterday (Friday) evening. All the nurses and doctors in the hospital were very helpful and competent (which is more than can be said for the various doctors I saw in the previous month about my cough), and 老師傅’s sister-in-law (張秀珠) who works in the hospital was very kind to me and Mummy while we were there.
